About
Alen Van Rooyen
Co-Founder
& Master Shaper.
Shipwright and wooden surfboard shaper
Growing up travelling the world with his parents and qualified as a traditional boat builder and machinist, Alen is a wood head through and through. His passion for surfing started when his family settled in Italy off the coast of the Tyrrhenian sea.
Obviously Italy isn’t known for its amazing surf but the occasional swell did come through and when it did they made the most of it! In the lulls between swells the local surfers spent a lot of time talking about board shapes and designs which ignited a curiosity for shaping surfboards.
Alen’s qualifications and experience in traditional boatbuilding techniques has seen him work as the head carpenter on traditional tall ships and restoring classic yachts in exotic locations around the world. Having settled in South Devon 6 years ago he continues to pursue his love of restoring wooden boats and has now ventured into making beautiful wooden surfboards and paddle boards known as Lignum Surfboards.
When Alen isn’t ploughing through grain at the workshop he can be found spending time with his young family or surfing the local spots on his lunch break.
